Leaving active duty is one of the most disorienting transitions a person can face. The VA processes disability claims, issues separation pay guidance, and operates TAP (Transition Assistance Program) workshops at installations nationwide. Average processing time for a standard claim is 85 days; a Fully Developed Claim can return a decision in as few as 30 days.

Eligibility Checklist

  • You served on active duty in the U.S. military, naval, or air service
  • You were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
  • You have a current physical or mental disability

VA operates the largest integrated health care system in the United States. Since January 2025, VA has scheduled over 1.9 million appointments outside normal hours — early morning, evenings, and weekends. Veterans in acute suicidal crisis received no-cost emergency care at VA facilities in over 50,000 cases in FY2024.

GI Bill & Vocational Rehabilitation

The Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) covers tuition and fees up to the in-state maximum at public schools, plus a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) based on E-5 with dependents BAH for the ZIP code where you train. Veterans who served 36+ months on active duty qualify for 100% of the benefit. VR&E (Chapter 31) serves veterans with service-connected disabilities affecting employment.

Eligibility Checklist

  • 100% benefit requires 36+ months active duty, or Purple Heart, or service-connected discharge
  • MHA paid monthly — based on E-5 with dependents BAH at school ZIP code
  • Benefits transfer to dependents after 10 years of service (active or reserve)
  • Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill) requires monthly $1 contribution during service
  • GI Bill benefits expire 15 years from last active duty separation (Ch. 33)

VA Home Loan & Housing Assistance

VA home loans require no down payment and no private mortgage insurance for eligible veterans — a benefit worth thousands of dollars annually compared to conventional financing. In FY2024, VA also approved 2,439 Specially Adapted Housing grants for veterans with severe service-connected disabilities, and saved 158,000 borrowers from foreclosure.

Eligibility Checklist

  • Served 90+ consecutive days active duty during wartime, or 181 days peacetime
  • National Guard / Reserve: 6 years of service or 90 days active duty under Title 10
  • No down payment required on loans up to conforming loan limits
  • VA funding fee waived for veterans with 10%+ service-connected disability rating
  • Surviving spouses of veterans who died in service or from service-connected disability may qualify

SGLI, VGLI & VALife

VA life insurance programs cover servicemembers, veterans, and their families across a range of needs. SGLI automatically covers active-duty members up to $500,000. Upon separation, veterans have 1 year and 120 days to convert to VGLI without a medical exam. VALife is a whole life policy available to veterans with service-connected disabilities.

  • SGLI covers all active-duty members automatically at $500,000 maximum
  • VGLI conversion window: 1 year 120 days from separation — no health questions
  • VALife available to veterans with any service-connected disability rating (0%–100%)

VA pension programs support wartime veterans and surviving spouses with limited income. Aid & Attendance is a pension supplement for those who need help with daily activities. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is available to survivors of veterans who died from service-connected conditions. Burial in a national cemetery is provided at no cost to eligible veterans.
